Welcome to the Society of Botanical Artists website.
We became a registered charity in 1995.

Our aims are:

  • To advance the education of the public by promoting the appreciation of  botanical art
  • To provide facilities for the exhibition of work by artists who practice this genre of art
  • The evaluation and awarding of qualifications to practicing, and those seeking to become, professional artists
  • To promote the protection, appreciation, conservation and nurture of plants and natural habitats of plant life with special reference to endangered species.

Botanical arts remains relevant as it bridges art, science, and conservation. In an age of digital imagery, it offers a timeless way to observe and appreciate nature’s complexity, supporting education, biodiversity awareness, and environmental stewardship.

Anyone with a passion for botanical art can join the SBA. Membership is open to emerging artists, and professionals. To become a member, you can apply through our website by submitting a portfolio of work that reflects your artistic and technical skill in botanical art.

You can start learning botanical art by studying the structure of plants, practicing observational drawing, and exploring colour and composition techniques. The SBA offers courses, workshops, and educational resources to help you develop your skills and artistic voice.

The SBA have a Foundation Certificate course to start next February. It’ll run for 10 months and be an entry into the world of botanical art before starting on the SBA’s Distance Learning Diploma Course. Tutors are all respected Fellow members of the SBA.

Yes. Many SBA members accept commissions for bespoke botanical artworks. You can browse our member directory or contact us directly to be connected with a professional artist suited to your specific project or subject.

Yes, our annual Plantae exhibitions are open for any artist to enter. All the submissions go through a selection process with around 15 judges to collate the final work for the show.
Plantae shows take place biennially at the Mall Galleries in London with an online show in the in between years.
